Herb, what resolution did you finally end up with? The highest I can get with my X1300 on my Inspiron 6400 is 1280 x 800 with a 60 hertz refresh rate. This is both utilizing the drivers that now update with a fresh install of Win 7 (the ATI drivers are now included in Windows Update) and I also tried the Modder approach with ver 10 and a ver 8 of the ATI Catalyst drivers. All produced the same result except, of course, with the Modder approach I ended up with Catalyst control panel.

FOR THE INDIVIDUAL WITH THE BASE SYSTEM DEVICE errors above, you need to download the Ricoh driver under the Chipset folder from the Dell website - R5C832 - http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INSPIRONI6400/E1505&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

These instruction saved me! Thanks a lot.

I installed Windows 7 (32 bit) from CD on Dell Inspiron 6400 whilst in Windows XP and got into a continuous reboot loop. The only way out of it I could find was to disable all drives but my CD drive, boot directly from the Windows 7 install CD and then install from there. After this I had a working computer but with a reduced screen resolution (and also no DirectX and no Aero). I used the instructions here to install the modded AT drivers and now my Inspiron is working perfectly.

I am slightly worried by the three unknown Base System Devices listed in Device Manager but as everyhgting seems to work and prepared to ingnore them!

My Dell Inspiron has 1.66mgz processor and 2gb Ram and so far with Windows 7 it flies.

I followed the instructions on http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php. I downloaded and installed the mod tool. I then downloaded the ATI drivers for Vista 32 at http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Legacy/Pages/radeonaiw_vista32.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.7&lang=English. When I downloaded them, I let them extract to a directory but did not install them. I then ran the mod tool. After that completed, I went into the folder that contained the ATI drivers and ran setup.exe. Once it finished, I rebooted and all is well.

I am having the same issue... A Dell Inspiron 6400 with an X1300 and the Windows 7 upgrade.

I tried the site you reference but I am not able to find "Windows 7" catalyst for it.

I tried doing the latest Vista 32 bit but with no success. What did you do?
